only 4 bucks for more than you can eat. it is spicey. some enthusiasts here will like that although i was a bit put off by it. that's right. put off..

Well. It's got some crab in it. It's baked in the big ol' bowl that they put it in, and while tasty, it's not really that memorable.

That said, it was a lot better in the long run than the date that I was on.

so hey that was super fun! Nice to catch up with Julie, Choly, Jennif, and Nancy.

The mac was tasty the beer even more so! :) Good vibes, good times.

we missed Anne, and missed especially Molly (I hear she was not actually drunk . . .), and we missed the mighty FP who so many of us were hoping to catch a rare sighthing of . . . alas no FPS were to be found. And no Leigh Anne either . . hmmm

otherwise it was the straight out mac jam, and there is a good welcoming love vibe at the unruly pleasure dome I must say.

So, there's a place on 15th that is a vegan sandwich shop/restuarant that has a really interesting/good mac and cheese that is made with yeast.

And, the rest of their food is really, really good.

To our customers, friends and neighbors ~

After 17 years, with fond memories, a couple lamps and two waffle irons tucked lovingly under our arm, we bid farewell to the jitterbug. On Friday, July 29th this little restaurant with big city flavor took on new ownership.

We offer our best wishes for success to jitterbug’s new owner, David Harris. This was a difficult decision for us as our roots have been planted here for so long. But after years of reflection we felt that this restaurant and the community of Wallingford would be better served with an on premise owner & operator. We hope those of you who have enjoyed dining with us over the years will continue to patronize jitterbug under its new ownership and embrace it as a ‘jewel’ in the crown that is the Wallingford Community.

For those of you who are wondering how you’ll ever live without the Charmoula Chicken Sandwich or those heavenly Gingerbread Waffles! Not to worry, they haven’t gone too far from the nest. The Charmoula Chicken Sandwich can be found at Endolyne Joe’s in Fauntleroy and the Gingerbread Waffles will be available at Coastal Kitchen on Capitol Hill.

We will soon be eliminating our jitterbug contact list from our CHOW’s Newsletter Contacts. If you were on jitterbug’s list and would like to continue receiving restaurant and community newsletters from any of our other neighborhood restaurants, please visit our website at: http://www.chowfoods.com

Thanks again for your support over the years!

Hope to see you at the restaurants ~

So I am starting a new post to leave the name commune behind . . .

It is looking more like it might be most clever to just have it on Sunday, August 14th, yeah I know it seems far away, but . . . the time will come sooner than we all realize, what do y'all think?

And hopefully I'll see some of you cheesey pastaheadz at Lincoln Park in West Seattle on the 17th I think that gets going 1 ish or 2 ish . . .

Yo yo yo so I stopped by scenic Ballard yesterday, you know to do some tai chi and cause trouble walking along the beach at golden gardens, and afterwards I was fortunate enough to get a tour of the "commune" aka the unruly house.

I has a nice dinner room, a backyard with a big tabla, and of course it has Julie, Leigh Anne, Melissa and Choly too.

So why don't we make some mac and eat in again? Julie said she and her housemates were down, so Julie are you down and what about all you smack heads, I mean mac-headz?

So... how hard is it to get in there? Is it super busy all the time? When we were at Madame K's, almost everybody was saying they had the best mac&cheese around. Hell, I think even the waitress said something like, "You are the mac & cheese connoisseurs of Seattle. I heard that Kingfish had the best." I MUST try it!

How about we go to Madame K's next time?

I had their mac this week. It was not as good as Venus or Kingfish, but it was pretty good and cheesey. It had a bunch of cheeses, including feta, plus tomatoes on top.

Plus Madame K's has that fun red walls/historic brothel ambiance, and the best sangria on Earth! (And yes I have been to Spain.)

Wednesday Night Smackdown?

I failed to generate much interest in doing sushi this Wednesday, so I'll give mac & cheese a try.

Here's the deal for those that don't belong to our sister sushi tribe: I'm driving my daughter and her friend to the Moore Theater to see Weezer on Wednesday (I wasn't able to get a ticket for myself). So, I'll be stuck in Seattle during the concert and I thought this would be a nice opportunity to get together with some friends. The show starts at 8:00, so I'll probably drop them off about 7:00. Any interest? [You guys that responded to my post in the sushi tribe don't need to post your regrets here.]

If there is no interest, do any of you have any recommendations for things to do in Seattle on a Wednesday night?

Thanks!

Question about cheese sauce

Now, being enthusiasts of the mac'n'cheese, I'm going to guess that at least some of you make your own. I'm not talkin Kraft boxed stuff, or even Annie's - I mean you cook up some pasta and make your own cheese sauce.

I always have trouble with the cheese sauce. Mine always winds up either thin and runny, or congeals back into a goopy cheese blob. How do you make a good cheese sauce? What's the secret?

So I stopped at Norm's Eatery in Fremont during a walk with the dog and noticed that they had M&C on the menu, but being a rest stop and a meal I didn’t try it. Can anyone give a quick review? This would be a great place for a mac meet as several of us could bring our children along.

We're looking for an individual w/ sass, w/ spark, w/ some technical expertise in wiring of dvd players and home stereos to tv's. Someone who would be willing to drive to the Roosevelt area where my lovely (and newly broken-hearted, if pity will help) assistant is in dire need of entertainment only because she has no technical training by which to set it up herself.. Would you deny her the help if you could provide it? I think not.. you're a stand up citizen.. or at least a citizen.. won't you help?

(Free mac w/ any of the above services rendered. Does not apply to any other services you may be able to supply. *ahem*)

I mean the place, not the emotion. Has anyone tried the mac there? While up in the BIG CITY on Thursday, I picked up a Stranger and Crave has an ad saying it serves mac & cheese with cheddar, fontina and shitake mushrooms.

It's not too early to start planning. I'm already out of town the entire week of the 14th.

We need:
1) New place - hot, jazzy, snazzy, wohayzy
2) Date (I mean a day and time - there is no getting dates for most of yous).
3) More people then the four losers who showed up last time (ok three losers and a really, really hot Jenn - who we figured out really is young enough to be my daughter)
4) A camera, and
5) a designated survey filler outer.

doods! Columbia City is the place to be! it's all gentrified with yuppies and what not and also has the affluent black community tossed in for spice.

The Wellington has amazing Mac 'n Cheese **BUT** it's four bucks and they only serve it in a little cup. it's great stuff. they also have meatloaf (fuckerpants didn't try it) and red beans and rice (which fuckerpants did try and was in heaven over) and i have to say that this is one of the best places in seattle for a dinner. they've got jazz on the weekends and they've Mac all the time.

do it !!!

DO IT!!!
Kosher mac aka "Wacky mac"

(at least I think its kosher. we found it in the kosher foods section. My G/f claims that it was because it had some sort of symbol on the box.)

Anyhoo.

It tastes exactly like regular mac right out of the box !! If it werent for the fact that the noodles were different shapes (what, no star of david ?) then I would be hard pressed to tell the difference !!!! Maybe theres more to this kosher thing than I though. except for the pork thing, it may not be so bad.

(note: All kosher mac loses its "kosher-ness" if you add pork sausage. Man, that rabbi dude was pissed.)

We had that shirt thread going and I got to thinking... [yeah, I know that's dangerous].

It's too bad we don't have a member that's trained in clothing design that could put together a Tribe mac & cheese "uniform" for us - like a t-shirt or something. Someone who maybe went to a school for things like that - even Art Insitute of Seattle. Who actually works in that field... Hmmm... does anyone know who would fit that description?

Hi, new to this tribe (some members of the Seattle History tribe recommended I join). Was just wondering if anyone had checked out/reviewed Beecher's, the cheese place by Pike Place Market?

I went in there once, and the mac'n'cheese (presumably made with their freshly-made cheese) was quite good as I recall. And they sell fresh cheese and cheese curds (yum) as well. I haven't been in there recently enough to write a real review though - my memory is a little hazy. Might be the amount of pasta I consume.

Ok.. so we could be like the Zagat of Mac or.. um.. the Magat? No.. definitely not.. that doesn't work.. Suggestions of what to call it?

We already rate 1-10 as a whole.. but should we change the other factors to 1-5? Like creaminess, taste, etc?

And categories: Cheesiness? Creaminess?/Richness? (Is there a diff btw), Herbed/no herb? Overall Taste, Overall Texture, Price.. what am I forgetting?

Miscellaneous: Service? Other items such as drinks/apps, etc.. ? and price going along w/ those..

Suggestions please!
Thx!

All the posts today made me crave the mac!

So I had to run an errand this afternoon down at the credit union on Eastlake. Cafe Venus is halfway between there and work. Yay! (Mental note for anyone who wants to lure me away from the lab for happy hour sometime.) I didn't go to the November sMACdown, so I had to catch up on that assignment. I stopped in there on the way back and had a late late lunch that was probably really dinner.

Wow the mac and cheese there was SO good! It had hints of garlic and wine and paprika (?) sprinkled around the edge of the plate. Plus some parsley and extra cheddar on top.

Il etait si magnifique que mon coeur se soit rempli avec l'amour!! (Eet was so good I must speak zee language of mac luff!)

Also, "Cold Sweat" by the Sugarcubes was playing on KEXP at the very second I took my first bite. Hauntingly delicious!

from our newbie:

Very very rich, beats Icon any day. Done with Fontina Cheese and some sort of penne. Sizes are on the smaller size, since it's a bistro. The prices range from $8-10 per plate, depending on what you get. I recommend the Alsatian Rene' white. NO F'N MERLOT!

Anyone heard of "Pair" in Ravenna?

"One tasty example is Pair's creamy mac & cheese ($6), featuring frilly horn-shaped campanelle pasta, mixed with melted fontina cheese, topped with a sprinkling of toasted bread crumbs for texture."

Pair ($$)
5501 30th Avenue N.E.
Seattle, WA 98105
Phone: 206-526-7655
If you approach on 30th Avenue N.E. from the south, you may think you've missed Pair---but just take a right, then it's on the corner on the left where 30th continues.

Went to Vivande on Friday night (up the block from Beecher's). Had Lobster Mach and Cheese. Wouldn't actually call it mac and cheese; a white cheese sauce over pasta, but it was stuffed with Lobster and truffels. I mean stuffed. The price was not for the faint of heart, but un-fuckerpants-believable! There web site for anyone who has recently won the lottery: http://vivanda.com/index.html

i bet wisconsin is THE mecca for mac 'n cheese. think about it:

they're rural and must have invented the stuff.

-they love their cheese

-they need their pasta for those cold-cold nights

-and they're all trashy

who wants to go on a Haj with me (??!!)

Turkish Mac & Cheese

I had a lamb roast to cook on Saturday and decided to make a Turkish dinner. I pulled out a Turkish cookbook that I've hardly ever used and thumbed through it to see what to make with the lamb. The book had a Turkish version of mac & cheese. I can't remember what it's actually called. But, it was just feta cheese and butter melted together with some paprika and then mixed with noodles. I made homemade egg noodles for it. It got mixed reviews. My wife didn't like it at all. My daughter snarfed it down. My sons liked it, but one thought it tasted too strong. I liked the flavor, but the texture wasn't so great. Instead of creamy, it was kinda gritty.

Ok.. so I had my first mac in the country up north.. and in an Irish bar no less. Don't really consider mac an Irish meal, but I went with it cuz it was first on the entree list.. The place is called Dentry's and it's near Kitsilano - east of it a bit and I can't remember the district's name.. drat.. but the mac was ok.. more like homemade would taste - not by me of course, cuz mine is better - but it had real cheese - sort of a mom's homemade taste to it.. can't really describe it well.. I do apologize, but I think we've all had better mac here.. it was fine tho for my first round of quality testing up there and it came w/ a caesar that was good too and a genuine Irish server.. so you know, there was mad culture to be had. I couldn't be terribly upset you understand.. and I was with the boyfriend meeting the mom and the sister - so I was already smiley - hard to be too critical when I'm that happy.. All in all, I give it a 4 out of 11 for the mac.. the weekend tho was more like a 9+..

well, the mac at elysian was very much like going out for drinks at the elysian--one is there for the experience and not the soul. the mac was pretty bad but the pasta was great.

we all know, however, that a great mac is made from more than just the pasta. the mac lacked cheese and sauce and all the other goody ingrediants to make it a great mac. **however** the salad and bread were REALLY great and, if taken with the mac, made the entire experience, semi-enjoyable--

Well my lovelies, I finally went......and I should have walked on by.

The Mac itself was fine. For the itty bitty cost of $4.99 you are served a small portion of their version of cheese and mac. And when I say small, think of the type of bowl thye give you when you get a fancy ice cream at an italian restuarant. This mixture was not anywhere near as unbalanced as Pamela's was but it was a very cheesey serving.

I felt going in and taking up bar space so I also ordered a white russian ($7.00) which was nice and strong. I also ordered a sample plate of chicken wigs ($8.99). Um...ya...so they gave me 6 wings.

Total cost came to $22.00 before tip. A little bit to pricey for a outing alone. But the real kicker of this is I am now having some real nasty stomach pains that I am blaming on my dinner there. Maybe it's me, but I don't think so.

So in conclusion, if you are thinking about going there, just say that you already have and continue walking down the street until you get to the Rendezvous. Thank you.

So any comment on the West 5 mac?

-I liked the choice of pasta..the "radiatore"...holds a lot of cheesy sauce!
-Good texture, creamy sauce, not too gritty.
-The crunchy breadcrumbs on top added a nice contrast to the creamy pasta
-Not quite cheesy enough for me, tho the addition of tabasco did add a nice tang
-The oh so adorable, friendly and patient waiter made up for anything lacking in the mac ;)

Overall, I'd say it was an upper middle class mac

Democratic conspiracy – re-sMac Demanded

Those liberal King County Democrats are responsible for the accident on 99 south that caused some of us to miss the first sMac down of 05. I demand a re-sMac as soon as possible – hold it, I’m a liberal King county democrat – damn.

Well, sorry I missed you folks last night, but after sitting at the bottom of Queen Anne Hill last night for 45 minutes, going nowhere I ended up eating Thai food, instead of dream Mac and Cheese. Can’t wait for the pictures.

Better mac ordering

Ok people.. I have to say that last night, for those of us who were there, was really fun.. however, I need to state this haphazard ordering style stressed me out. Sorry to let you down y'all but I'm not made of money and I really didn't plan on spending as much as I did last night. So... the whole let's order 8 different macs and such.. I think is not such a snappy idea. We had a lot left over, which yes, was consumed, but it really wasn't needed. For future can we please just order separately - if you want mac, get it.. if you want to share w/ someone, figure that out before we get over our heads w/ too many.. not saying we need 18 different checks.. just figure out what you want and get it for yourself or those around you.. if we decide we want 1 or 2 more macs to share for the group, then lets do that.. but let's call it good at that point.. Sorry if that's too much on the bitchy side for this early in the am.. but I gotta be honest..

Mac and Cheese Translations

Devylicious just gave me an idea, when she brought up her new boy toy in Canada and eating Maque and Cheese with him. The idea is most unusual translation of mac and cheese into a foreign language. I'll start with Italian: maccheroni e formaggio. Anybody else?

So who is the lucky kid who gets to bring me along to the West 5 this Monday? I know everyone loves to carpool, and we peeps who don't have cars love those who do.

So stand up and stand tall and shout out loud. Who wants me?

I need to know before monday cause I'll be in work class until 5:00pm.

If more than one person applies for this duty, I shall consider each request thoroughly to make the wisest, most fashionable appearance as possible. Safety is not an issue.

so yeah. i didn't listen to cassandra (nobody does) and went to linda's and had the mac there.

yeah, it's shit. it's like mirabeau room's mac. shitty and bland. i think they're both heaten up the same box.

HOWEVER, Linda's does give you some chopped squash on the side so that you can fork some Vitamin E into ya while you take a bite of carbo-heartblocking-goodness.

that made it bearable.

AND ON THAT NOTE: per my *vision*, The Salmon could be on the side--perhaps the entire thing could be served on a platter with a bowl of mac, a slab of fishy, and some dipping Cheese! LIKE Fondooo!

sincerely,

being native american, i had a vision the other day involving mac and salmon.

imagine some kingfish cafe type mac (watery in angel's eyes; heavenly in mine) that is fairly understated yet supremely tasty. now put this on top (not on the side) of a fairly large chunk of salmon.

large enough that you can get a piece of it with every single bite of mac. put a lemon garnish on the side and flavor as one would desire. maybe add more cheese or put some onions in there.

i don't know, it was a short visions.

here at mac 'n whoors inc., we don't have visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads.
